NEW LONDON · TRAIL GUIDE

Connecticut College Arboretum

A wooded outing close to New London, with a network that deserves a little planning before you set off. Our recorded walks here show that a local trail can still give dogs a substantial change of scene.

TOM’S FIELD NOTES

What matters on this walk.

The August report here recorded three dogs covering 2.7 miles on a wet-weather day. Rain changes the footing and the pace I ask of a group. I want dogs moving comfortably, with time to investigate, rather than treating the distance on the report as a target to hit.

FROM THE TRAIL DIARY

A day here with the pack.

Our August 3 outing is recorded with GPS, photos, and video. It lasted 59 minutes with three dogs. That is a record of one day in the woods, not a suggested route through every part of the Arboretum.

Terrain and pace

The Arboretum includes plant collections and natural areas with different paths. Use the College’s trail map to choose a section; a visit to the Native Plant Collection is not the same route as an outing farther into the woods.

What I would plan around

Check the current map and choose the section before arriving. Wet leaves, roots, and changing footing are reasons to slow down or shorten the plan. Give plantings, wildlife, and other visitors space.
